3.🌿 GNDVI Insights: Monitoring Crop Health from Above

Purpose:

The Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI) is a powerful tool for assessing chlorophyll content and photosynthetic activity in crops. By analyzing reflected light in the green and near-infrared spectrum, GNDVI provides insights into plant vigor and overall health.

Observations:

  • High GNDVI values: Indicate lush, healthy vegetation with strong photosynthetic activity. These areas are likely experiencing optimal growth conditions.

  • Lower GNDVI values: May signal stress due to nutrient deficiencies, pest infestations, water stress, or disease. Early detection allows for timely intervention.

Let’s look at the above image:

The index map highlights zones of variation across the field. Brighter (higher values) typically mean healthy, photosynthetically active vegetation, while darker (lower values) indicate potential stress.

Recommendations:

  • Low-value zones (lighter or red areas):

    • Investigate nutrient deficiencies → apply targeted fertilizers.

    • Check for pest infestations or water stress.

  • Moderate-value zones:

    • Monitor closely; may develop stress if not managed.

  • High-value zones (green areas):

    • Maintain current practices; crops are thriving.
